The Oribi Gorge, just west of Port Shepstone, cut by the Mzimkulwana River through the Oribi
Flats (flat sugarcane farmlands) of KwaZulu-Natal, is the eastern of two gorges. This gorge is
home to the Lake Eland Game Reserve – 2500 hectares with diverse ecosystems of bushveld,
grassland, coastal forest and wetland.
A game self-drive, viewing the abundant wildlife and hunting by camera, from the comfort of our
car, is one of our favourite activities. The accompanying photos are of blesbok, impala (rooibok),
wildebeest, zebra, buffaloes and eland. There are many more to be seen: giraffes, bush buck, blue
duiker, kudu, oribi, etc., and we will keep clicking those cameras for more and better images.
Other activities in the game reserve include a zip line, suspension bridge, mountain biking,
hiking trails, and accommodation. Well worth visiting when you are in the area.
