L’AS DES AS DU GLADIATOR
Le plus grand as sur Gladiator fut le pilote sud-africain Marmaduke St. John “Pat” Pattle avec 15,5 victoires toutes remportées contre des avions italiens, en seulement 9 mois, au sein du No. 80 Squadron.
Son tableau de chasse fut complété de 35 autres victories obtenues sur un autre type d’appareil, mais son score officiel ne fut jamais vraiment déterminé, même s’il est officiellement crédité de 40 victoires confirmées. Nombreux sont les historiens qui le considèrent comme le meilleur as de la Royal Air Force, ou en tout cas le meilleur as sud-africain. Il fut abattu le 20 avril 1941 au cours de la bataille aérienne d’Athènes au-dessus du Pirée.

The biggest ace in a Gladiator was the South African Marmaduke St. John «Pat» Pattle pilot with 15.5 victories all against Italian airplanes, in just nine months, within the No. 80 Squadron.
His list of conquests was completed with 35 other victories obtained on another type of aircraft, but its official score was never really determined, although it is officially credited with 40 confirmed victories. Many historians consider him as the Royal Air Force’s best ace, or at least the best South African ace. He was shot in 1941 on April 20th during the Athens air battle over Piraeus port.
