Iowa Wins Field Hockey Tournament Championship
Hawkeyes claim first Big Ten Tournament title since 2008
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Second-seeded Iowa defeated No. 5-seed Penn State, 1-0, in overtime of the 2019
Big Ten Field Hockey Tournament championship game at Penn State Field Hockey Complex on Sunday.
With the victory, Iowa (16-4, 7-1 Big Ten) secured its sixth Big Ten Tournament title and first since 2008 to earn
the conference’s automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.
Iowa’s Maddy Murphy, a 2019 first-team All-Big Ten selection, scored the lone goal of the game just 26
seconds into the first overtime period after a pass from teammate Leah Zellner. The win marks Hawkeye
head coach Lisa Cellucci’s first Big Ten Tournament title and the program’s sixth title overall. Iowa’s Katie
Birch, a unanimous 2019 first-team All-Big Ten selection, earned tournament MVP honors.
