Greenwich Field Hockey Stays Alive in FCIAC
Chase with Win Over Wilton

The Greenwich High School field hockey
team made its final game of the regular
season a memorable one by traveling to Wilton
High School and upending the perennial
powers 2-1 earlier today.
“We have been working really hard and they
brought their 60-minute game today,”
Greenwich High School head coach Allyn
Orrico said. “I think this game is a great
confidence builder because Wilton is such a
great team. To be able to beat a team like
that on their home field is big. I told the girls
all season that they need to believe in
themselves and play like a team. They did that
today.”
The loss for the Warriors was the first of the season. Although they already locked up the No. 1 seed in
the FCIAC postseason, the Warriors fell to 11-1-1.
Greenwich scored both its goals in the first half, as senior Sarah Stinebaugh and sophomore Paige Mautner each
found the back of the net.
“It was very important to get those two first half goals,” Orrico said. “I keep on preaching to the girls that they
need to control the tempo of the game. They are very skilled, and this is such a momentum game. If you can
really come out, set the pace and really control the tempo of the game, you are really able to ride that wave the
whole way.” Fellow sophomore Kate Palastro assisted on Stinebaugh’s goal.
As a team, Greenwich finished with four shots on net while Wilton added 10. GHS senior goalie Leah Hotaling
finished with eight saves in the winning effort. For Wilton, Jillian Mahon scored the lone Warrior goal, while
Amanda Hendry finished with two saves. With the victory, the Cardinals upped its conference record to 6-4-3-0
and moved into an eighth-place tie with Westhill High School in the FCIAC standings. However, in order to
compete in the FCIAC tournament, Big Red will need some help. Norwalk and Westhill will play each other
Thursday and the outcome of that contest will go a long way in determining Greenwich’s FCIAC tournament
fate.
“I’m going to let thing play out and not worry about it,” Orrico said. “You would go crazy thinking about the
scenarios, and it will keep you up all night. Whatever happens, happens. I am still just as proud of the girls
because it’s still playoff season. If we get into FCIACs, that would be beautiful. If not, then this game set the
tone for us in the playoff season. I like the way the girls set the tone.”
