Wilton Moves Four-ward Three-time
Defending State Champs Advance

WILTON — When the Wilton High field hockey team is clicking on all cylinders, the Warriors are tough to
defend. Joel Barlow can certainly attest to that fact because after a scoreless first half, Wilton dominated in the
second on its way to a 2- 0 victory over the Falcons in the Class M state tournament quarterfinals on a rainy
Thursday afternoon game at Fujitani field.
“We came out very strong in the second half,” Warriors’ standout senior forward and Captain Meg Cunningham
said. “We had a lot more aggression going towards goal and we worked a lot better together.”
The win catapulted top-seed and three- time defending state champion Wilton (16- 3- 1) into the semifinals
where the Warriors will face a recent familiar foe in Lauralton Hall on Tuesday or Wednesday at a time and site
to be determined. The Warriors defeated the Crusaders in last year’s Class M championship game 1- 0 in
overtime and also beat them 1-0 during the most recent regular season. “They are going to be out for blood, and
we know that,” Wilton head coach Deirdre Hynes said with a laugh. “I’m sure they’re not over last year’s final
and this is exactly what they wanted. They wanted a rematch. This (win) gives the girls some confidence.” As
