Wilton Advances to State Finals with 2-0 Win

After being held to only one
shot on goal through the
first 51 minutes, the Wilton
High field hockey team
score twice in a span of
about two minutes late in
the game to escape with a 2-
0 win over Lauralton Hall,
in the Class M state
semifinals Tuesday night at
Fairfield Ludlowe High
School.
The top-seeded Warriors
(17-3-1-0) advanced to the
state finals for the fourth
straight year. They will face
second-seeded Daniel Hand
in the finals on Saturday at
Wethersfield High School.
Bridget Ward broke a scoreless tie with 7:08 left to play when she knocked in a rebound in front of the
Crusaders’ goal. Katherine Campbell made it 2-0 with 4:55 left, tipping a pass by Ward into the cage.
It was an exciting game that went up and
down the field, with Lauralton Hall, the
fourth seed, getting most of the good scoring
chances. Amanda Hendry came up with three
key saves in goal for Wilton midway through
the second half to keep the game scoreless.
With 10 minutes left to play, the Crusaders
had a 7-3 edge in penalty corners and 7-1
edge in shots on goal.
Hendry finished with seven saves in goal for
Wilton. Meg Cunningham and Ward each
had an assist. For the game, Lauralton Hall
had a 7-6
edge in corners and 7-3 advantage in shots on
goal.
