Wilton Nips Westhill Field Hockey 2-1
Thursday, October 2, 2014
STAMFORD -- Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder.
Perception and the bottom line took different paths
Monday as the Wilton field hockey team posted a 2-1
road triumph over Westhill.
Although the win left Wilton at 8-1 overall and a
perfect 7-0 in the FCIAC, Warriors veteran
coach Dierdre Hynes wasn't a happy camper after
the battle.
"Overall, I would say this was our flattest performance
of the season," Hynes said. "I realize we played
Saturday night (a 2-1 road loss to powerful
Lakeland/Panas (N.Y.). And this was our third game in four days. But our team should have no excuses. To get
to the FCIAC and state playoffs and play up to our expectations, we have to do better. We had so many mental
mistakes today."
Meanwhile, despite the loss, the glass was certainly half full in the estimation of Westhill (3-3-1 overall, 2-3-
1 FCIAC).
"This contest was a challenge for us. And we proved ourselves worthy," Westhill third-year coach Kevin
DeAngelo said. "Wilton is a perennial power and they have been steamrolling teams this season. A one-goal
loss is a great result for us."
On an afternoon where the field hockey gods kept
the rain away, both offenses kept the goalies busy.
Westhill goalie Bella Montenegro registered 10
saves as Wilton pressured with six penalty corners.
Wilton goalie Amanda Hendry finished with seven
timely saves.
Ultimately, it was a game where Wilton's
experience and depth won the day.
Wilton grabbed a 1-0 lead just 7:23 into play
as Delaney Baxendale scored off a penalty corner
