Wilton Field Hockey Falls to Lakeland

Playing three games in four days, the Wilton High
field hockey team suffered its first loss of the season
on Saturday night at Lakeland, N.Y., and then
struggled to score a harder-than-expected 2-1 win at
        Westhill Monday.

The Warriors, who also defeated Trumbull last
Friday, 6-0, improved to 8-1 overall and 6-0 in
FCIAC play, heading into Friday’s big home game
against Darien (6-1) at 4pm. Like Wilton, the Blue
Wave’s only loss was to Lakeland.

Wilton also had a big game next Tuesday at home,
when it hosts Fairfield Ward (6-1) at 4pm.

On Saturday night, Lakeland – the five-time
defending Class B state champ in New York –
improved to 10-0 with its win over the

Warriors. Lakeland took a 2-0 halftime lead behind
two goals by Molly Fitzpatrick. Meg Cunningham
scored for Wilton in the second half on an unassisted
        goal.

On Monday against 3-3 Westhill, the Warriors were
locked in a 1-1 tie when Delaney Baxendale’s second-half goal helped them eke out a 2-1 win. Baxendale
scored both goals, with Cunningham notching two assists and Kristen Godin one assist.

Goalie Amanda Hendry, who had a big game against Lakeland to keep the Warriors close on Saturday, had
seven saves in the win over Westhill.

In the win over Trumbull last Friday at home, Baxendale scored two goals to lead the attack, with other goals by
Jillian Mahon, Delaney Chase, Maddie Duffy and Katie Leffel. Cunningham also had two assists in this game,
while Mahon and Godin each had one assist. Hendry made four saves for her sixth shutout of the season.
