Wave defense. They found the back of the cage twice in a span of four minutes midway through the half, with
Bridget War and Kristen Godin scoring the goals, to notch the win.
“We knew it was going to be a hard game it was going to be a challenge, but we were ready for that,” Said
Cunningham. “It feels great and it definitely gives everybody on the team a lot of confidence, especially the
girls that scored, but we know the season’s not close to being over. We are trying to improve every single day.
We’re just trying to improve and we’re doing it together.”
“They didn’t come out intimidated at all. They played their game, which is exactly what I wanted them to do,
and I think they did a fantastic job doing that,” said head coach Deirdre Hynes.
For a young team with many new players, Friday’s win was an indication of how much the Warriors have
grown over the first month of play, she said.
“We’ve played 10 games. We’ve learned from our games and our weaknesses what to improve on now, and I
think they’re growing and maturing as a team and learning how to improve their game to the next level. And the
big test was this game and they showed that they can learn, and they can improve.”
Both teams finished with 11 shots on goal, and both goalies – Hendry and Darien’s Kaeleigh Morrill – finished
with seven saves.
The Warriors, however, had a big 15-3 advantage in penalty corners – an indication of where the flow of the
play was headed much of the game.
Both teams had chances to score in the first half, with Darien’s Georgia Cassidy in particular creating several
dangerous scoring opportunities. The best chance came with two minutes left in the half, when Cassidy lifted a
shot over the head of Hendry, who reached back to make a spectacular glove save to deny the goal – one of her
four saves in the half.
