Greenwich High Field Hockey Team Edged by
Wilton in FCIAC Quarterfinals
Saturday, October 25, 2014
For the second time this week, the Greenwich High School field hockey team gave Wilton all it could handle,
and then some. After earning the No. 8 seed in the FCIAC Tournament by handing the Warriors their first loss
of the season on Wednesday, the Cardinals took top-seeded Wilton to double overtime on Saturday.
But this time, it was the Warriors that pulled out a close win.
Senior Meg Cunningham scored with 8 minutes, 49 seconds remaining in the second overtime session, giving
Wilton a hard-fought 2-1 victory over the visiting Cardinals. Wilton, which trailed Greenwich 1-0 late in the
second half, (12-1-1) advanced to Tuesday's semifinal round at Brien McMahon High School with the victory.
"Our team played a tremendous game," GHS coach Ally Orrico said. "The girls really left it all out on the field.
It was a back-and-forth battle throughout the game. It was such an evenly-matched game and I'm so proud of
our team for the effort and great performance they gave."
Both teams had scoring opportunities in the first half. Cardinals senior goalie Leah Hotaling kept it a scoreless
game heading into halftime with a key save off a Wilton penalty stroke. Hotaling registered 14 saves in goal.
