Cunningham scored to make it 3-0 early in the
second half, after a good push down the right side by
Ward and scramble in front of the goal. The Warriors
made it 4-0 off a penalty corner, when Baxendale’s
blast was reflected into the goal by a McMahon
defender. Five minutes later, off another corner,
Godin redirected a hit by Baxendale into the cage to
make it 5-0. Baxendale scored the final two goals,
the first of a nice setup by Rosen and the second off
another penalty
corner, on the pass from Rappaport. With Wilton
dominating the midfield, McMahon’s only shot came
more than 35 minutes into the game and was stopped
by goalie Amanda Hendry. The Warriors were like a
swarm in the midfield.
“Our goal is to help everywhere on the field. We’re
a unit, we’re going to be together,” said
Cunningham, who had been impressed with the play
of the younger players.
“They’re impressing us every single time they step
on the field. They’re doing amazing/” she said.
“We lost some really good players last year, but they set a really good example for us of how seniors should act
and how to be on the field,” said
Taverna. “We’ve been really
supportive of the younger girls
and really welcoming, so that’s
definitely helped on the field.
They’ve really, really stepped up
and I’m really proud of them.”
Hynes said that there was still
plenty of kinks to be worked out
in the next few months, on a
game-by-game basis.
“It’s early on right now… so
that’s what we’re looking for each
game – some slight improvement,
whether it’s communicating more
on the field, finishing together,
communicating defensibly and
offensively, and all that.”
