6 About RBG Labs
The Rehabilitation Bioengineering Group at Engineering Design Department,
IIT Madras explores new ventures in applying design thinking to solve complex socio-
economic problems and discover new insights for research and growth. Aim of the lab
is to assess the capabilities and limitations in societal demands and design innovative
solutions to improve quality and productivity of human, process, and products. A big
impact in productivity improvements and various product development initiative have
been done in industries ranging from automotive manufacturing to medical devices &
implants, postal services, and leather goods manufacturing. RBG Labs Transportation
Safety Framework (TSF) provided a structured data-driven systems approach to road
safety enabling State Governments to strategize public policy, programs, and action
plans. Served as an advisor to Tamil Nadu Government to establish the program Tamil
Nadu Accident and Emergency Care Initiative (TAEI) to strengthen trauma care in the
State through lean structural and process improvements which proved to be pivotal in
bringing down the road accident fatalities in Tamil Nadu. Continuing with the success
in Tamil Nadu, projects with the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH)
and Rajasthan Government to implement the Transportation Safety Framework for
road safety has been underway. Further through the Integrated Road Accident
Database (iRAD) project with MoRTH, several high-level conferences and training
programs have been conducted across India, to share its design thinking premises
and methodologies of understanding and improving road safety.
