Inspiring
young girls
out there
After completing a Journalism Diploma at
ML Sultan Techikon, my journalism career
started at Independent Newspapers,
KwaZulu-Natal, when in enrolled in a one-
year internship programme. During that
period, I wrote for various publications,
including The Mercury and The Daily
News. I then moved to Johannesburg
where I joined The Sowetan newspaper as
crime reporter before getting an offer to
work for Isolezwe. When I left my former
employer The New Age a year ago, I was
news editor. I took the decision to focus
on writing books and building my
company Hlomu Publishing, which has
been operating since 2015.
My books, Hlomu The Wife, Zandile The
Resolute, Naledi His Love and Zulu
Wedding have all been bestsellers in
every bookstore in the country. The books
follow the story of a 22-year-old woman
who goes to Johannesburg to start a
career. There she finds love and joy and
pain. The story touches on family, the
contrast between being a black modern
independent woman and culture, and
coming of age among other things.
I am currently working on my fifth book in
the Hlomu series before I explore more
black stories inspired by everyday people.
What drives me is the support I have
received from many South Africans, the
ability to be in full control of my art and
earnings and the fact that one day I could
possibly be as successful and be
as famous as Brenda Fassie and inspire a
young girl out there I don’t know.
