RECOGNIZE THE IMPACT OF DIFFERENCES
Encouraging Diverse Ideas
Breakout Rooms.
Use breakout rooms to encourage team member
involvement with developing ideas and facilitate
interpersonal connections in smaller groups. Many video
platforms such as Zoom include a “breakout” feature
where the leader can assign smaller group discussions
within a larger group. The leader can also set a time limit
for the breakouts.
How to do it:
o Begin your virtual meeting by reviewing meeting
goals and objectives. Then, assign breakout rooms
with 2-3 people per room, with a time limit.
o When time is up, bring all breakout groups together
as a whole. Depending on the assigned task, you have
some options for sharing ideas:
o Each subgroup can email you (the leader) what
they came up with. You could then plan next
steps.
o One representative from each subgroup reports
out to the wider team, while inviting comments
and clarification.
o Shared recommendations can be recorded into a
poll or form as representatives are presenting
them. A voting link can be sent to all group
members via the chat function or email to vote
on which ideas they like best.
