Rules of Equation Solving
Let’s review a few equation solving rules to improve our mathematical skillset. Much of the arithmetic
problem solving we do in water treatment requires us to insert numbers into formulas to calculate a
result that we, in turn, use to make critical operational decisions and evaluations.
Here are 4 basic math problem solving rules:
1. Work from left to right.
2. Perform all the multiplication and division in the numerator (above the division line) and in the denominator
(below the division line) first; then do the addition and subtraction above and below the line.
3. Perform the division by dividing the numerator (above the line) by the denominator (below the line)
4. Always perform the math inside parentheses first before proceeding with the rest of the equation as indicated
in steps 1, 2, & 3.
Which of these results is incorrect because it broke the rules of equation solving?
(1.1 + 3.3 -2.22) (8) =17.44 10 x 0.0001+1=101 1 - 0.0001 x 10 = -99 1,000 - (10) (10) / (0.99 + 0.01) = 9,900
