Significant Figures and Rounding Numbers
The term “significant figures” refers to the accuracy or confidence in a particular
measurement.
In water treatment operations most of our calculations are based on measurements
obtained from laboratory equipment, read from scales, charts, or meters.
The accuracy of this data is subject to the sample being measured, the equipment
doing the measuring and the reading of the results.
In other words, calculations can have no more significant figures than the least
precise of our individual measurements.
