Step 1: Total surface area of fence to be sealed:
Both sides of the fence, minus both sides of the area for the 3 access gates
First, we need to calculate the total surface area of the fence. Since both sides will be sealed,
we must multiply by two
2 (8ft x 250ft) = 4,000 ft 2
Now, we need the total surface area for the chain-link access gate. Since the dimensions are in
inches, we convert this to feet by dividing each by 12, 1 foot = 12 inches
96in/12in = 8 feet and 36in/12in = 3 feet, which gives us 8ft x 3ft = 24ft 2
We know there are 3 gates, each with 2 sides that must be subtracted from the total surface
area as follows:
4,000ft – 6 (8ft x 3ft) = 3,856ft 2
