Advanced Nitrification
Nitrification Permit Monitoring
Permit requirements focus on the treatment plant’s ability to remove ammonia
concentration from the wastewater.
Permits will focus on the treatment plant accountability of Nitrite, Nitrate, and
Ammonia concentrations in the final effluent.
Another measure is Total Kjeldahl Nitrogen (TKN). TKN is an analytical method
which measures the sum of nitrogen bound within organic and inorganic nitrogen.
Common permit effluent ammonia limits are 1.0 mg/L, or less (based on the
receiving water body sensitivities).
Total Nitrogen (TN) concentration values will be higher (typically 2 to 6 mg/l).
