Advanced Nitrification
Nitrification Process Control Summary
Nitrification and denitrification (oxidation of NH4 → NO2 → NO3 → N2) require
additional specialized Autotrophic organisms that can be grown separately
within its own treatment scheme or comingled within Heterotrophic activated
sludge.
Comingled Heterotrophic and Autotrophic communities result in lower food to
mass ratios (typically less than 0.2). Remember, higher the biomass
population lowers F:M ratio.
