Advanced Nitrification
Nitrification Process Control Summary cont.
Autotrophs produce nitric acid as a waste product, often requiring alkalinity
supplementation at a rate of 7.14 pounds of alkalinity to every pound of
ammonium. Autotrophs require temperatures above 12 C resulting in
seasonal nitrogen removal in colder climates.
In-Process control parameters include In-Process, pH, Alkalinity, DO, OUR, SVI,
Temperature, F:M, SRT or MCRT with daily microscopic analysis of desired
indicator organisms to ensure the overall health of the activated sludge.
Transitional process control proactively encourages nitrifier growth in the
spring and nitrifier elimination in the fall if a treatment plant has chlorine
disinfection.
