overground locomotory function in the most rapid and comfortable
manner. Return of limb function may be assisted through promoting
swimming, or wading through water in a water treadmill, or through
activities on obstacle courses that encourage marked excursions of
the treated diseased joint. Throughout the rehabilitation programme the
progress of the patient should be closely monitored. Regardless of
the rehabilitation methods used, the primary outcome measure should
be an assessment of the function of the limb when the patient is walking
and running, since ability to return to normal function in these important
activities is the goal of the arthroscopic procedure and of the postopera-
                              tive care.
