               are specialized for a single task—the killing of invading organisms
               —macrophages are much more flexible. Depending on their
               location and environmental signals, macrophages can respond in
               many different ways. The use of two phagocytic cell systems also
               permits cooperation between neutrophils and macrophages to
               enhance many aspects of innate immunity. For example,
               neutrophils tend to be of greater importance in killing extracellular
               pathogens, whereas macrophages dominate in the fight against
               intracellular pathogens.
