There are many examples of virus infections in which the presence
VetBooks.ir of antibodies results in increased susceptibility or severity of

infection. Several mechanisms are involved in this, and many are
poorly understood. One important mechanism observed in cats

with feline coronavirus or FIV is antibody-dependent enhancement.
This can involve, as described previously, antibody coating of
virions so that their entry into cells through Fcγ receptors is
enhanced. This FcR-mediated entry may be less effective than other

routes in triggering interferon production. Some experimental FIV,
simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV), and equine infectious anemia
virus vaccines may increase disease susceptibility by a similar
mechanism. FIV envelope-specific antibodies appear especially

               effective in enhancing infection.
