               Once they reach sites of microbial invasion, neutrophils eat and
               destroy the invading bacteria through phagocytosis. Although a

               continuous process, phagocytosis can be divided into discrete
               stages: activation, chemotaxis, adherence, ingestion, and
               destruction (Fig. 5.9).
