               SIRS-Associated Laminitis


               Acute laminitis is a common debilitating disease in horses and
               ponies. While traditionally considered a single entity, laminitis is
               now recognized to result from several different mechanisms: these
               include endocrinopathic disease caused by prolonged

               hyperinsulinemia, support-limb laminitis caused by prolonged
               weight-bearing on one hoof, and inflammation-related laminitis.
