IL-12p35, respectively. Both cytokines are produced by
VetBooks.ir macrophages and dendritic cells in response to LPS, and both

enhance T cell proliferation and the production of IFN-γ. Whereas
IL-12 drives a pathway leading to Th1 cell production, IL-23 drives
                                                                                                  +
a pathway leading to the stabilization of IL-17-producing CD4 T
cells. IL-23 recruits diverse inflammatory cells in addition to Th17
cells and is thus involved in the pathogenesis of several immune-
mediated diseases. The production of IL-23 is increased in some

tumors, where it promotes inflammation and enhances
               angiogenesis (Chapter 35).

FIG. 20.15 The generation of Th1 and Th17 cells depends upon
the production of IL-12 or IL-23 by antigen-presenting cells. Th1
cells promote cell-mediated responses. Th17 cells promote innate
                                                       responses.

               Interleukin-17

Six cytokines belong to the IL-17 family (IL-17A through IL-17F),
but the two most important members are IL-17A and IL-17F. IL-17A
