If some form of collar has to be used, it should be correctly fitted and removed at regular
intervals. It should only be used as a temporary solution while management changes are
being made.
Prevention
• Avoid sudden weaning. Gradual weaning is more natural and reduces the incidence of
stereotypic behaviour. Foals should be kept at pasture with suitable companions and fed a
suitable diet without excessively high levels of carbohydrate.
• Avoid diets and feeding practices that encourage gastric acidity.
• Avoid stabling horses for long periods.
• Provide suitable companions.
