CHAIN SHANK
This is sometimes used on a horse that cannot be twitched. However, it should only be used
by experienced handlers because incorrect use can cause severe injury to the horse. The first
part of the lead rope is made of a metal chain. This can be attached to the headcollar and
passed over the nose or through the mouth or across the upper gums. The latter two are an
extremely severe form of restraint.
In every case, the restraint is used for the minimum possible time.
