Open wounds below the knee and hock heal slowly owing to:
• poor blood supply
• low temperature
• minimal wound contraction as the skin is bound to the underlying tissues
• susceptibility to contamination and infection
• swelling
• proud flesh.
These problems can be minimized by appropriate use of bandages and dressings, but wounds
on the lower limb frequently take longer to heal than wounds elsewhere on the body (Figure
3.10).
