Safety
The technique is very safe as no toxic chemicals or ionizing radiation are used. A general
anaesthetic, with its associated risks, can generally be avoided.
What is it used for?
• To aid diagnosis when the pain has been localized to a specific area but no radiographic
or ultrasonographic changes are visible.
• It can detect pathological changes in:
– ligaments
– tendons
– joint capsules
– articular cartilage
– muscle
