What is it used for?
It is an important tool for both diagnosis and treatment of joint lesions. The technique is
especially useful for evaluation of joints which have no radiographic changes but the
lameness is reduced or abolished following intra-articular analgesia. Once a lesion has been
identified, surgical instruments are introduced via a second incision.
Procedures performed include:
• joint lavage – the joint is flushed to remove harmful inflammatory mediators and debris
from breakdown of articular cartilage and subchondral bone
• debridement of articular cartilage defects, bone cysts, exposed subchondral bone and
