Anatomy of the foot
The horse’s foot consists of the protective hoof and all the structures contained within it. The
hoof is modified skin. The wall, sole, frog and periople are derived from the epidermis; the
underlying sensitive laminae and the sensitive tissues of the sole, frog, periople and coronet
are derived from the dermis.
External structures
The periople, the hoof wall, the sole and the frog make up the external structures of the foot
(Figure 6.1).
