The coffin joint or distal interphalangeal joint extends between the pedal bone (distal
phalanx) (P3), the second phalanx (P2) and the navicular bone. The deep digital flexor
tendon passes over the navicular bone and attaches to the pedal bone. The navicular bursa,
a fluid-filled sac, cushions the movement of the deep digital flexor tendon over the navicular
bone. The common digital extensor tendon attaches to the extensor process on the front of
the pedal bone.
The cartilages of the foot (Figure 6.5) are attached to either side of the pedal bone. They
project above the coronet and are easily palpated. They are normally springy, but may
become hard and unyielding due to deposition of bone (sidebone).
