             The digital cushion,  consisting  of  fibrous,  elastic  and  fatty  tissue,  occupies  the  space
        between the frog and the cartilages towards the back of the foot. It has the important function

        of absorbing concussion.



        Routine care of the feet

        As the horse’s feet are by far the commonest cause of lameness, regular care helps to prevent

        problems developing.


        DAILY HOOF CARE

        •    The feet should be picked out at least once a day and certainly before and after exercise.

             Special attention should be paid to thorough cleaning of the clefts of the frog.
        •    The shoes should be inspected for risen clenches and any movement away from the hoof

             wall or uneven wear of the metal shoe.

        •    The bedding of stabled horses should be kept clean and dry to prevent diseases such as
             thrush.

        •    Horses and ponies at grass should have a well-drained area to stand on so the hoof does
             not become excessively soft and crumbly due to constantly standing in moisture.



        TRIMMING

        Trimming is required every 4–6 weeks. The farrier uses his skill to maintain or restore the
