Causes
• Infrequent trimming and leaving the shoes on too long.
• Trimming the heels too short and/or leaving the toe too long.
• Some Thoroughbreds have a genetic predisposition.
Clinical signs
• The toes become abnormally long and the heels too low.
• The hoof-pastern axis is broken back (see Figures 6.8 and 6.9).
• The angle between the anterior hoof wall and the ground surface gradually decreases as
the toes lengthen.
• The angle of the hoof wall at the heel becomes progressively less than the angle of the
hoof wall at the toe (Figure 6.38). When there is a discrepancy of more than 5 degrees the
