Causes
• Inadequate bedding.
• Leaning against the stable wall or trailer ramp.
• A blow to the point of the hock.
Prevention
• Provide a thick, banked bed.
• Protect the hocks when travelling.
Capped elbows are subcutaneous bursae which develop on the point of the elbow. The fluid-
filled swelling is usually cold and painless.
Causes
They are caused by repeated knocks from the heel of the front shoe when the horse lies
down, or during fast work.
