        PROGNOSIS

        The prognosis is guarded once infection has become established within a tendon sheath.




        BURSAE



        A bursa is a small sac of synovial fluid, lined with synovial membrane which acts as a natural

        cushion or padding over a bony prominence. They may be congenital or acquired.



        Congenital bursae are present in all horses at birth and they occur in areas where a tendon
        glides over a bony prominence. The fluid-filled sac cushions the tendon and protects it from

        friction as the tendon moves. Examples include:

        •    the navicular bursa, which lies between the navicular bone and the deep digital flexor
