There are 3 stages of the disease.
Stage 1
Periostitis of the dorsal and dorsomedial (at the front and towards the inside of the leg)
surface of the cannon bone causes the horse to appear stiff or bilaterally lame. These horses
are sore on palpation but there is no change in the contour of the cannon bone. No changes
are visible on radiographs. This is a common occurrence in 2-year-old Thoroughbreds in
training.
Stage 2
New bone is deposited on the dorsomedial aspect of the cannon bone as a result of continued
stress from training and racing. The shins develop a convex profile and are sore on palpation.
