Following surgery the horse is usually given:

• a period of box rest followed by the introduction of controlled walking exercise
• field rest for a further 3–12 months.
PROGNOSIS
The prognosis is variable depending on the location and size of the cyst. Horses under 3
years of age with small lesions have the best chance of becoming and staying sound.
Conservative treatment can be successful for small lesions in horses that are not required to
perform athletically. Success rates following surgery in young horses can be up to 75%. The
prognosis is poor if degenerative changes have occurred in the joint.
