Clinical signs


        These are variable but often include:

        •    Poor performance

        •    Stiffness

        •    Lameness or a shortened hind limb stride

        •    Difficulty with downward transitions
        •    Discomfort walking downhill

        •    Reluctance to jump.




        Diagnosis

        The diagnosis is confirmed by a combination of:

        •    Radiography
        •    Ultrasound

        •    Scintigraphy.




        Treatment

        This may include:

        •    Ultrasound-guided injection of corticosteroids into or close to the affected joints

        •    Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication, e.g. phenylbutazone
        •    Acupuncture

        •    Chiropractic or osteopathy

        •    Physiotherapy

        •    Pasture rest with a quiet companion

        •    A rehabilitation programme to increase the mobility of the spine and to strengthen the
             supporting muscles.



        Prognosis


        The prognosis is variable, depending on the severity of the arthritis and the use of the horse.
