CHRONIC SACROILIAC ARTHRITIS
Horses with degenerative changes of the sacroiliac joint are treated in the following way.
VetBooks.ir • The joint may be injected with corticosteroid and following 48 hours of box rest and
controlled exercise the horse is turned out for 7 days.
• An in-hand exercise programme is given to build up the strength of the back and croup
musculature for 4–8 weeks before ridden exercise commences. Your vet or veterinary
physiotherapist will advise you on this.
• Back stretches and strengthening exercises are helpful.
• Regular ridden exercise is introduced over 2–3 months.
• The horse should be kept as fit as possible to prevent recurrence of the pain. This usually
requires daily work.
• Acupuncture, chiropractic adjustments and physiotherapy can be helpful.
• Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs may be necessary for the first 2–3 weeks.
Prognosis
The prognosis is guarded. Many horses with sacroiliac problems are not able to return to their
previous level of performance. Many exhibit intermittent, low-grade lameness which reduces
with rest and recurs with work.
