Prognosis
With appropriate and early treatment, most cases of sinusitis resolve and carry a good
prognosis. The occasional horse continues to show intermittent, low-grade signs that
temporarily respond to antibiotics. The cost of treatment can be high.
PNEUMONIA
Pneumonia is a serious condition caused by bacterial infection of the lungs or inhalation of
foreign material. The bacteria cause severe inflammation, and pus accumulates within the
lung tissue and the airways. Large abscesses may form. These are difficult to treat and the
mortality rate is high. Even if the animal survives, there may be permanent damage to the
lung tissue. Bacterial pneumonia is uncommon in adult horses and tends to affect foals and
young animals.
