Clinical signs
These include:

• depression
• lethargy
• weakness
• ataxia (they are unsteady on their legs)
• ventral oedema (Figure 17.17)
• mild abdominal pain due to swelling of the liver.

If they progress to liver failure, signs may include:
• weight loss
