The affected areas are itchy and sore.

        •    Loss of appetite.

             Staggering gait.
        •    Blindness.

        •    Coma.



        TREATMENT

        Horses with low-level poisoning usually make a full recovery if they are removed from the
        affected pasture. Treatment involves:

        •    antibiotics
        •    good wound management

        •    keeping the horse in a darkened stable during daylight hours.



        Laburnum (Laburnum anagyroides)


        Laburnum is an ornamental tree with bright yellow flowers, commonly planted in gardens. It
        is very poisonous as all parts of the plant contain the alkaloid cytisine, especially the seeds

        and bark.



        CLINICAL SIGNS
        •    Fever.

        •    Diarrhoea.

        •    Incoordination.

        •    Muscle spasms.
        •    Unsteady gait.

        •    Colic.

        •    Recumbency.

        •    Seizures.
        •    Death.




        Treatment is symptomatic. Fatal poisoning is uncommon.
