They also occur:
• in the parotid salivary gland area
• on the ears
• around the sheath
• on the iris of the eye (see Figure 21.28)
• on the lips
• on the neck
• on the limbs
• in lymphatic tissue, internal organs and the guttural pouch.
Appearance
In hairless regions of the horse’s skin, melanomas have a raised, smooth, black, knobbly
appearance. In other sites, they may be covered with hair (Figure 18.42). They can occur
singly or in groups. When they occur in clusters or become very large, melanomas may
ulcerate and ooze a thick black fluid.
