During this time one or more follicles in the ovaries increases in size and ruptures to release
an egg (ovulation). The mare normally ovulates approximately 24 hours before the end of
oestrus. The maturation of the follicle can be monitored by the vet on successive rectal and
ultrasound examinations.
DIOESTRUS
The mare is no longer receptive and may behave aggressively towards the stallion. She is
likely to put her ears back, swish her tail and may squeal or lash out (Figure 19.8).
