“Beeeeeeeeeeeep.”
The long, low wail of the machines snapped Matt awake. He was alone inside the
room. Annabelle was gone. There was nothing to show Matt what he’d experienced
was real. Nothing but his heart to tell him Tank was now a guardian angel.
A slow smile filled Matt’s face. Moved from his lips to his heart. He was happy.
Happy for Tank he’d made good. Happy for himself he’d gotten to share Tank’s
story.
Matt’s smile continued as the nurses arrived to turn off the machines. To have
Matt sign document after document as they wheeled his friend to surgery. Tank’s
organs would help those in need.
He moved to the window once Tank’s body was gone. Looked out for some
reason. A compulsion to look he couldn’t turn away from. Down on the sidewalk
stood Annabelle as she looked up at Matt.
Behind her in full glory stood Tank. His hands on her shoulders and his wings
spread wide. Matt let one last tear fall from his face. His friend had found a home at
last.
