UNIT 1: GETTING TO KNOW YOU

                  THEORY

                  PRESENT SIMPLE: Uses

                             • For habits. Something that happens regularly or habitually: He works in an
                                office

                             • Used for a general, permanent or natural truth or situation, or scientific fact:
They live in a London suburb; Water boils at 100º c

                         Notice the difference between:

Temporary: He is living near Bristol (for the moment)

Permanent: They live in a London suburb

                  PRESENT SIMPLE: Forms

                      Affirmative:

                      Structure subject + verb

Verb + -s: we place the –s at the end of the verb in the third person singular: He lives in
                      Madrid/ I live in Madrid

Verb + -es: we place –es after verbs ending in –s/-sh/-ch/-x y also in do and go: He teaches
English; She goes to the gym

Verb+ -ies: we replace the –y for –ies in verbs ending in -y: Mary studies in the library

                      Negative:

Structure: subject + do not (don´t) or does not (doesn´t)

To turn an affirmative sentence into a negative sentence, we add the auxiliaries do not
(don´t) or does not (doesn´t) before the main verb:: I do not live in London; He does not
                      study French

We use does not (doesn´t) for the third person singular

                      Interrogative:

Structure: do or does+ subject + main verb

Short answers: yes, I do; no, I don´t; yes, he does; no, he doesn´t
