PRESENT SIMPLE: Uses
• For habits. Something that happens regularly or habitually: He works in an
office
• Used for a general, permanent or natural truth or situation, or scientific fact:
They live in a London suburb; Water boils at 100º c
Notice the difference between:
Temporary: He is living near Bristol (for the moment)
Permanent: They live in a London suburb
PRESENT SIMPLE: Forms
Affirmative:
Structure subject + verb
Verb + -s: we place the –s at the end of the verb in the third person singular: He lives in
Madrid/ I live in Madrid
Verb + -es: we place –es after verbs ending in –s/-sh/-ch/-x y also in do and go: He teaches
English; She goes to the gym
Verb+ -ies: we replace the –y for –ies in verbs ending in -y: Mary studies in the library
Negative:
Structure: subject + do not (don´t) or does not (doesn´t)
To turn an affirmative sentence into a negative sentence, we add the auxiliaries do not
(don´t) or does not (doesn´t) before the main verb:: I do not live in London; He does not
study French
We use does not (doesn´t) for the third person singular
Interrogative:
Structure: do or does+ subject + main verb
Short answers: yes, I do; no, I don´t; yes, he does; no, he doesn´t
