Cockscombing (single-stranded): this is an ideal way of covering a circular object, because the gaps
that naturally occur on the inside are taken up by the curvature of the object. Cockscombing is
comprised quite simply, of alternate hitches worked backwards and forwards.
Start by forming a cow hitch (figure 29.1) then, working in one direction only, continue to make
hitches forwards (figure 29.2) then follow this with a hitch backwards. As you work around the ring,
the gaps that would form on the inside of a straight cylindrical object close together within the circle
(figure 29.3).
