Adventures in Newcomb
My friends and I love hiking. I must also admit, we love patches
too. Me especially. When you can combine the two of them to-
gether it’s a total win-win situation. Add in an opportunity to hike
in the Adirondacks and discover new and exciting places and I’m all
in.
We’ve collected quite a few patches so far but hadn’t gotten to
the Newcomb Challenge yet. The three of us hiked Goodnow
Mountain and had seen the Octopus Tree a couple of years ago
when we were working on the fire towers. We’ve passed by the
AIC a bunch of times on our way to other adventures…not knowing
the beauty of this “hidden gem” was waiting to be discovered. We
had been up near the Blast Furnace last year when we hiked out to
Hanging Spear and Opalescent Falls while working on the Adk 50
Falls Challenge, but hadn’t taken the time to explore the Village of
Adirondac and walk in the footsteps of former President Teddy
Roosevelt. We spent hours meandering around the Santanoni
Farm and exploring the Campsite Trail. There is so much to see and
do for people of all hiking levels.
We didn’t get to all of the items on the Newcomb Challenge
lists…….yet. We plan to head back to the “Heart of the Adiron-
dacks” soon and work on the other items on the lists. No doubt
there are many more adventures waiting for me and my friends
and hopefully a moose sighting somewhere along the way. There
isn’t a patch for that but it’s on my Adirondack bucket list.
